Maria Motyleva is a multi-disciplinary artist and educator who primarily uses textiles and embroidery as her main medium in object creation, socially engaged art and performative practice.
Maria grew up between Moscow and Adygea, in the Northern Caucasus and has lived in Europe for over twelve years.
Being an emigrant, she is not currently living in any fixed location and moves between the Caucasus Mountains, Switzerland and Portugal.
She graduated from Moscow State University of Printing Arts and studied illustration and visual arts at Ar.Co – Centro de Arte e Comunicação Visual in Lisbon.
Maria is mostly focused on embroidery and textile as an artistic medium and as a performative, social and cultural practice.
Her work is built around the act of repair: touching up the old or damaged pieces with embroidery and celebrating the damages holding memory traces.
This practice centers the care of personal memories through the objects, representing them in the physical world with the very slow, therapeutic and almost archaic practice of embroidery.
Aside from studio work, Maria’s interests lie in the spaces of participatory art.
Collaborating with people through education, activism and social projects has become the foundation of her recent practice.
