Du 21/09/2023 au 14/10/2023
Alain SNYERS
Exhibition as part of the Tenth Biennale Hors Normes in Lyon.
Opening: September 27 – 18 p.m.
The proposition of the Biennale “the time has come…” resonates like an invitation. The invitation from the media library was to ask me to think more specifically about the question of time passing... with the starting point of Etienne Klein's book which asks the question: does time pass? I refer you to his book for all the questions and thoughts he presents.
At the reception of the media library, I offer a video (made during one of my journeys from my home in Saône et Loire to Lyon and to the media library)
-visible on my you tube channel at p'tit bazar alice calm-
It is a direct illustration of a metaphor that Etienne Klein proposes to explain the block universe: a notion of space-time where the points of time pre-exist our presence in the world. I’ll let you discover the text and images…
The passage of time is a vast area not very easy to approach.
Beforehand, I will say a few words about the hair I use for embroidery. The use of this material places one in a temporal trajectory. Indeed, hair changes throughout life. The most obvious aspect is its color change. In addition, by growing, it is a reflection of our emotional states and is directly affected by significant events in our lives. From root to tip, like a timeline, it is inscribed in time and duration.
To evoke the passing of time, I chose several approaches which intersect between windows (6), photos (18), sound and video. There are a few on every floor. There is no order, no center.
A few words in bulk for some avenues of exploration: patterns, rhythms, repetitions, variations, dates, a diary, the effects of time passing (the hair that changes color over time), the effects time under the earth, the seasons, birthdays, calendar holidays, memories, time to do, time to embroider, metamorphoses, before and after...
Generally speaking, there are two kinds of objects and embroidery in the windows: those which illustrate a point and those which function as “cartels”, labels or legends…
On the ground floor:
In Earth Time, there are also glass boxes with a kimono, dolls and a poem
On the first floor: MARK DAYS, DATES, KEEP A DIARY, INTIMATE
at the leisure area:
in the music area:
In the music room: a sound to listen to: a composition dating from 2011 which bears the title “le temps de…” – listen on “sound cloud alice calm” –
and on the second floor: in the news area: TIME (WHO PASSES?)
a window display with butterflies, butterflies made from old family photos and sewn with hair... the ephemeral butterfly but also a symbol of transformation...
passing time ? accompanies them is embroidery bringing together all kinds of words and expressions in the lexical field of time….
and a window evoking cycles: cycles of life, the time cycle of clocks and watches, the seasons... and perhaps caterpillars...
