Inception is an ode to the complexity and beauty of lichens.
Lichens are not only a source of inspiration, but also a field for reflection on our existence and our relationship with the planet.
Lichens are as old as Earth's history. We have been constantly evolving for 3 billion years. Lichens knew how to adapt, they were survivors par excellence, acclimatizing even in the most extreme conditions. They cling to different surfaces and exist in a simple and unassuming way, without great expectations. Lichens are mysterious. They hide their secrets between folds, nooks and crannies. They are a labyrinth whose end can be a beginning. Their sinuous shapes simulate an explosion of creative energy that takes us back to the origin. This is the idea that gives this work its name.
Inception was made from recycled fabrics, each with its own history and memory, which intertwine and come together to evoke this vital explosion.
With its emphasis on texture and layering, the work challenges us to think about our own interpersonal relationships and our connection to the natural environment. Just as lichens depend on each other to thrive, we too depend on an interconnected web of relationships to thrive as individuals and as a society.
