VIBRATING HEARTS
Alice Calm, with her hair embroidery on drum skin, brings together and intertwines different universes, evoking practices and rituals that may belong to various communities.
Drumbeats, heartbeats, isn't the heart drumming?
The heart motif has become all the more popular because it appears to remain a powerful and recognizable symbol, capable of communicating a rich range of emotions and meanings. The heart: life, love, the sacred.
Alice Calm offers three representations here.
The "artichoke heart" literally means "to have an artichoke heart."
The “pine cone” heart, symbolizing immortality and rebirth, creates a link between the profane and the sacred.
Two sacred hearts, using the codes of religious imagery, express a love beyond the human, powerful, fiery and radiant.
She uses drums and tambourines as embroidery hoops and embroideries with her own hair. The drumhead is pricked to outline the design. The stitches created by the prick are then filled and connected with hair to create shading.
The skin, the pricker, the needle, making an analogy with the world of tattooing, the embroidered motifs are directly inspired by it. Embroidery and tattooing also come together in the action of "marking." The etymology of the word "tattoo" directly refers to the marking of the skin. Linen was "marked" with the initials of its owner to identify it during major washes.
The use of hair, a material she particularly likes, reinforces the brand through the presence of the DNA of the person to whom it belongs but also its bodily anchoring: the vibrant hearts in the bodies.
