Tao Te Ching (Chapter 25)

United by their passion for incorporating embroidery and textiles into their artistic works, artists Helena Her, Clara Joris, Amelia Nin, and Marcela Sánchez draw inspiration from the writings of the twenty-fifth chapter of the Tao Te Ching and organize a joint exhibition at the M3 Atelierhaus Mengerzeile. As part of this exhibition, artist Maria Ferrera will present her performance « Everyday Pieces » on Thursday, December 5.

Helena Her: Something happens when we pierce the fabric with the needle, and it resonates in our body. There’s something in the fabric that challenges many people. Perhaps it’s the ancient echo in our body’s memory of a language that existed before the written word: the language of needles and textiles. As a contemporary artist, Helena loves enabling people to glimpse the intimate through textiles.

Clara Joris: Her work is inspired by the literary genre of « magical realism, » better known in literature than in visual arts. In her paintings, the boundaries between reality, fiction, and fantasy blur as reality merges with dreams and mysticism, creating a form of surrealism. Clara Joris is a Spanish artist whose works have been exhibited internationally. Since 1998, the artist has lived and worked in Berlin.

Amelia Nin: Amelia Nin is an artist from Uruguay who has lived in Berlin since 2007. Her work is the symbolic and intuitive expression of the longing for a closer relationship with nature. Her textile creations explore the connection between microcosm and macrocosm and build bridges between the tangible and the intangible. Her works have been exhibited internationally and are part of private collections in Germany, Mexico, and Uruguay.

Marcela Sánchez: My artistic work moves between different media, including textiles. Thematically, I mainly deal with questions of identity, migration, and gender roles. The migration experience, which has strongly shaped my own life, plays a central role in my work. These experiences flow into the representation of interspaces and identity shifts, which concern both the physical and emotional dimensions of migration.

Maria Ferrara:
At a first encounter, curiosity stimulates our senses.
Routine numbs them: We stop perceiving and only recognize what we already know.
The things we see every day seem to lose their luster, but in reality, it is our gaze that has become cloudy.
A playful exploration of the everyday, a discovery of the extraordinary side of the ordinary, a new encounter with what I think I know, through a real-time composition.
