Citrus Skin Balaclava 1-6

Following in the mask tradition of activist groups like Pussy Riot and the Guerilla Girls. The six balaclavas made for Biotic Commune are symbolic of a collective cause or idea over the individual. I think it was a Pussy Riot member who said that while an individual can be arrested an idea cannot. The balaclavas should stand at eye height and are symbolic of the hopeful future of the Symbiocene. In their original showing at the Museum of Economic Botany they were standing in peaceful opposition to the numerous busts of white male scientists that continue to look down on the Museum’s collections. The positioning of these scientists on their pedestals are symbols of the ongoing colonisation of land, ideas and exploitation of the natural world. While these masks are about regenerative practices, taking care and stepping down from the ways of the Anthropocene.
